The Department of Botany

DST- FIST SUPPORTED DEPARTMENT

The Department of Botany was established in 1927 under Madras University. Over the years it has become a full fledged department with graduate and post graduate courses in Botany and Biotechnology and a research centre affiliated to MahatmaGandhi University, Kottayam. The Department has identified  various thrust areas of research viz. Plant systematics, Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry, Seed Physiology, Environmental Sciences, Plant Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. Steps are under way to start a fully fledged laboratory in phytochemistry to give impetus to the medicinal plant research. As 85 glorious years roll in to the history of the department, it has developed by leaps and bounds contributing significantly to the development of the college and the society.

The Department has a well equipped central library with more than 1.5 lakhs books and 9 journals. A separate departmental Post Graduate reference library is running with more than 4000 books and computers with internet facilities. Presently the department has well equipped research laboratories in Molecular Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences, Phytochemistry, Pharmacognosy,  and Plant Systematics. The Regional Herbarium Kerala (International acronym - RHK) housed in the department, established under the UGC, New Delhi and the Botanical Survey of India is modernized and expanded. The Botanical Garden is with a rich germplam collection of rare and endangered plants. Under Graduate and Post Graduate students are supported with scholarships and other charitable schemes.

BOTANIC SCIENCE ASSOCIATION
The Association acts as the extramural focus of the department. The students can be part of the association even after they graduate from here.

RESEARCH LABORATORIES

The Department is a recognized research centre of Mahatma Gandhi University. Currently there are three research streams:

Plant Biotechnology
The plant biotechnology laboratory was started in 1990 to promote research and teaching in plant tissue culture. The lab was recently extended as to include Microbiology and Molecular Biology divisions

Environmental Science

The environmental Science Laboratory was founded in 1994 to address to both fundamental and applied questions

Plant Systematics

The plant Systematics Laboratory, established in 1982, works in close collaboration with the regional Herbarium of Kerala (RHK) housed in the Department.
