The Department of Library Science

The Department of Library and Information Science was established in 2002. That year it started BLISc and MLISc in 2004. Both the courses are self-financing. SB College is the first college in MG University to start Library and Information Science courses and the first in Kerala to start a MLISc Course.

Enhancement of Learning Resources

There are 350 textbooks, 7 periodicals, 1 computer with Internet facility, 1 OHP and 1 LCD projector.

Innovations in Teaching and Counselling

Apart from the conventional classroom teaching we conduct seminars, group discussions and symposium. Furthermore, the students are exposed to lectures by experts in the field. Additional training is given on data entry and computer application. Adhering to the mentoring system of the college, each batch is guided by a mentor. 

Participation in Academic Activities and Extension

Fr Jose Viruppel is a member of the Staff Council, Grievance Cell, Library Committee, IQAC, and Research Committee. In addition, he is the Dean and Director of Value Education

Thrust Areas of Research, Projects, Publications and Collaboration

Fr Jose Viruppel has published 3 papers and presented 1 paper in the National Seminar on Information Technology held at Thiruvananthapuram in 2005.

Continuous Assessment, Placements

For the continuous assessment of students we employ mainly termly examinations, periodic assignments, and project works. So far, 80 % of the students passed out are placed as librarians in various schools in Kerala.

Future Plans

In the next five years we envisage the following plan of action for the Department
• Launching of MPhil Course in Library and Information Science
• Initiation of research programmes
• Exchange programmes with other Universities in India and abroad.
